Painter of Life, oils
Mike Murphy
Mike likes to say he is a Painter of Life, and you can feel that when you stand in front of his work. He paints in oil with a soft spot for light: Greenville’s Falls Park tumbling toward you, a cabin glowing in the woods, an elephant under a full moon, a little family of mallards along the pond.
He studied art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Illinois. Most of his life was spent in business management and ownership, painting part time. Then he spent ten years as Executive Director at the Box Factory for the Arts (boxfactoryforthearts.org) in St. Joseph, Michigan, where he had his studio. He retired in 2011 and has been painting ever since. You can find him as a featured artist at Simpsonville Fine Art Gallery in Simpsonville, SC.
Colored pencil and graphite
Karen Murphy
Karen works in colored pencil and graphite, and you can feel the time she spends when you stand in front of a drawing. She has a soft spot for faces and fine detail: a young girl in a patterned dress, Kit Kat the tabby, a kitchen drain that breaks right out of the picture.
Some drawings are portraits you could almost speak to. Others have a little humor tucked in. Either way, Karen wants you to lean in. You can find her as a featured artist at Simpsonville Fine Art Gallery in Simpsonville, SC.
